Personal Values Essays Personal Values Essay Personal Values Essay This paper is about personal values development. In this paper I will be examining my personal values, ground rules, and ethics development. Primarily a focus on developing these values, rules, and ethics will be discussed in the paper. Included in this paper would be what my values are the sources that shaped my values, and the criteria and decision-making factors I make the most of to revise them. Finally I will discuss the potential impact of my values and performance in the workplace. What are personal values? Included are many definitions out there that can define values and how they can relate to ones personal beliefs. My definition would be what I believe and what I am against. My personal value is that I believe that I should provide a quality of life suitable for my family. I believe that spending the most time with my family is important. I believe that a job should let one work from home. How did I develop these types of values? I believe I learned them from growing up in a family oriented home. I had a mother that stayed home and a father that worked. I believe most of my values where developed from how I grew up and what I learned throughout life. How can I develop and improve values? By living and learning is a way to develop better values. I believe that a person can develop more and improve his or hers values by experiencing what is right or wrong and how someone handles those situations. Developing ground rules in relation to values and ethics are important. Rules can provide a path or guideline to be able to improve and develop more positive values. Rules can also enhance the ethical development that can be learned. My rules would include if the values help me improve personally and professionally, and stick with the values. If the behavior is something I am against then I must understand why I am against the behavior. I believe that rules are important and should be followed which can help better shape someone’s values. Ethics is defined as â€Å"a system of moral principles and the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc. † Values and ethics are varying much are intertwining with each other. Ethics is a much bigger then just values. Ethics is a system of all the values and principles. How can I develop ethics? This question is hard to find an answer to right now. My answer would be I believe I would interconnect all my values and rules that I know o develop the ethics that are who I am. I believe my development of ethics has just started by understanding what ethics are and understanding what are my values. Let’s return to the first part of this paper when I explained a few of my values. What are my values? My values are that family comes first, and provide a lifestyle suitable as explained earlier. My values are more to my life then just that. Values are what make who I am special and different. I believe in fighting for my country in which I have been a in the military for 13 years and counting. I believe the military has engrained a few of my values. Several sources have shaped my values. As said before in this paper my parents have shaped my values by how they raised me and how their values became apart of mine. The United States Navy and Army have shaped my values by influencing their values and ways into my life. The military has and will continue to shape my values in a positive direction and I will bring these values into my professional life on the civilian side. Examples of the military that shaped my values would be the willingness to take chances and adapt to change. When I first joined the military I was not apt to take chances or use to change. After boot camp and several years after I am use to change but I still need to work on taking chances as in doing things I am not use to doing. Taking chances will always be something I need to work at and the military as provided me a way to better concur that challenge. The military has also shape my values how I work on a team. I absolutely love to work with others on team then do things myself. I believe that I learn more with working with others and providing my skills as a team member. Other examples that shaped my values would be being a student at the University of Phoenix. Being a student at the University of Phoenix has taught me values on how to research, work as a team, and writing papers. In researching I learned I need to look at more then just one reference. As working as a team I learned that all people in the group have strength to contribute. Writing papers I learned formal APA style and how to site references. The criteria and decision-making factors that I make use of with my values would help me figure out ways to improve or change my values in a positive way. The criteria of my values would include learning, and expiring how my values impact the way I think and live. Decision-making factors I would make use to be to analyze if making a certain decision according to my values would impact my work or life. I believe making solid decisions through using common sense of the situation would lead to success in making the right decision. What is the potential impact of my values and my performance in the workplace? The impact can be positive or negative depending on the decision you make upon the values you have within the workplace. If you are required to do a job you feel uncomfortable with due to the fact you are inexperienced at the task, how do you handle that? Values and common sense comes in. Do you ask? Do you take a chance at the task? You will have to decide on the proper value to implement to make that decision. Here’s another example of impact of values and performance in the workplace. What if you are tasked to do something boarding illegal? Do you tell someone? Do you suggest not doing the task? Every value you have will be tested and everyone will have to decide what to do. Bad values and judgment can have an effect on the workplace. For example, if you are showing up everyday, but bad performance of work. What needs to happen as a manager? If the person is you with the bad performance ask yourself why? Even those with good values, have bad values that can interject with the proper decision making process in the workplace. One idea to get around the bad values is to understand why and ask for assistance. I believe that values and performance in the workplace will always be an issue in a positive and negative sense. An employee will always have values because they are not machines, they are human. Businesses need to understand and train everyone about ethics and values. That is why business has their own rules and procedures on values and ethics. In conclusion this paper was about personal values development. In this paper I discussed developing my values, rules, and ethics. I included what my values are the sources that shaped my values and how the importance’s of the sources are to my life. I then discussed criteria and decision-making factors I make the most of to revise my values. Finally I discussed the potential impact of values and performance in the workplace. I believe this paper has given me more insight on my values, rules, and ethics has they relate to my personal and professional life. I know that my values will grow and learn ethics throughout this course and professional. I believe that having a general understanding how my values interconnect with events or things that have happen. My hope is to further understand values and ethics and project what I learn throughout the rest of my life. The main reason that everybody wants to go to the United States is because if they would go somewhere like France or Japan, although they would get higher wages, there is a much greater chance of getting harassed, arrested or deported in those countries, as opposed to the United States (Bergen 1). I lived in South Florida for fifteen years. Throughout that time , I was exposed to different situations that involved immigration. I feel that it should definitely be restricted. United States immigration policy in recent decades has not provided for strong, effective measures to reduce illegal immigration, and at the same time, explicitly authorizes high levels of legal immigration (Delaet 3). Meaning of Underworld in the Odyssey and Aeneid Essay

In both Odyssey and Aeneid the protagonists visit the Underworld and for both this is a turning point of their life and the turning point of the plot. For Odyssey the unusual travel marks his symbolic â€Å"cleansing† from blood he has shed at Troy and from anger of gods, making it possible for him to return to Ithaca. Before traveling to the Underworld Aeneas is an expellee, who strives â€Å"in vain against the seas and wind† (Aeneid, 5: 21). After the travel he is a father of the new glorious people. Both heroes receive new knowledge and rise to the higher level of personality. Visiting the world of the dead is important for Odyssey and Aeneas because it marks the choice of scenario for the future. For example, Aeneas’s fate as a leader of the newborn Roman people has been predetermined, yet to start walking this new way he has to go to the underworld. His father shows him many great souls who are to be reincarnated in future to become great Roman heroes, so future is predetermined not only by Aeneas’s effort, but by the spirit of those great heroes. In contrast, Odyssey enters the kingdom of the dead in search of his friend Tiresias whom he has to speak to in order to return to Ithaca. His travel is not so fateful for the people, but it is fateful for Odyssey himself. Aeneas is told to go to the Underworld in a dream by the spirit of his dead father. Odyssey also has a kind of dream on Circe’s island where he spends seven years thinking that only seven days have passed. But when Circe learns that Odyssey has no love for her, she nobly explains him that the only man who knows the way to Ithaca is Tiresias who can be found only in the afterworld. Odyssey is driven by â€Å"unhappy fate below the sunlight† (Odyssey 11:798-799), and his ultimate purpose is finding the way. He would perhaps never go to Hades, in case there was another way to Ithaca. He says that he â€Å"had to come down here to Hades’ home, to meet the he shade of Teiresias of Thebes, and hear his prophecy†. (Odyssey, 11: 199-201). In Hades he meets his mother of whom he did not know that she was dead. Her suicide and sorrowful events in Ithaca is a kind of punishment for Odyssey’s false pride. In contrast to Odyssey, Aeneas’s purpose is choosing the way. Meeting his father he symbolically passes through the golden gate to become a recognized ruler, and a tool of destiny that has chosen to make Aeneas’s people great. Homer describes the underworld as a dull place of suffering, where warriors who died in battle have to continue carrying their wounds. In fact, for Homer living after death is just a continuation of earthly vain. For example, when Odyssey meets Trojan heroes like Patroclus, they run away frightened, as if the struggle for Troy still went on. Odyssey’s dead friends the can only tell how they died and got to this dark kingdom. Homer has a gloomy idea of the underworld. Achilles says that he would rather be a living serf and a landless peasant than a King of the Dead. So Odyssey becomes aware of futility of war that sends heroes to this dark place. In contrast, Aeneas returns with the vision of the great future and he is now decisive to work hard for it. â€Å"Within the hero’s mind his joys renew’d† (Aeneid 5: 904) and so he eagerly sets sails for the new homeland.

African Americans deserved the same fair treatment of American freedom. In this poem Hughes knew that by labor he’s an American citizen; but as a black man in the pre-Civil rights movement, he wasn’t being treated like one. This poem identifies the struggles of a working minority black man. Freedom and equality are two concepts that good citizens should demonstrate. The speaker is envisioning a world in which he’ll be just as welcomed as all the free people in the country. I argue that even though African Americans were racially sketched they still had hope that the future would be brighter.
